The media is doing a brilliant job of messing with people’s minds this January. They are predicting Armageddon for businesses this year. They say it will be all doom and gloom for businesses in 2012. Austerity measures, increasing unemployment, euro crisis, etc etc.

Wait a minute, the media said mostly the same things about 2011 up until December 2011.   However, some businesses made record sales last December despite the predictions: http://www.managementtoday.co.uk/news/1110700/are-waitrose-jjb-sports-clinton-cards-christmas-retail-miracles/.

For me, this is all the evidence I need not to be fearful and to keep pushing forward despite what the papers say. If some businesses can do it, then I can do it too. That is all I need to know as I start the year.

I have learnt not to believe everything I read in the papers. The media are in the business of selling newspaper. Period. They will publish anything that will sell more papers, so their stories are sometimes not entirely accurate. You put yourself at their mercy if you hang on their words.

I made a decision last year to unplug from traditional media (breaking news especially) and it was brilliant. I lived in a bubble and it served me well. I was fearless, motivated and happy because I didn’t get the daily injection of bad demotivating news with my breakfast.

I’ll be doing the same this year.

Mind you although I was unplugged, I still heard about all the important stuff happening in the world from people and social media feeds. Its hard to avoid it completely, people can’t help but spread whatever they hear. This provided me with all the information I needed to keep current without being constantly distracted by the fear and negativity being sold by the media.

I’m protective of what I feed my mind with these days because it is all I’ve got to work with. Anything that gets in my mind ultimately affects the decisions I make and whether or not I take action to achieve my goals.

So this year, I’ll still protect it, nurture it with positivity and hope and I’ll be rewarded because my actions can only go where your mind goes and a positive mind is a very creative and resourceful mind.

Below is an except from the book, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill that I find intriguing:

 If you think you are beaten you are;

If you think you dare not, you don’t;

If you want to win but think you can’t;

It’s almost a cinch you won’t.

If you think you’ll lose you’re lost;

For out of the world we find

Success begins with a fellow’s will;

It’s all in a state of mind.

Life’s battles don’t always go

To the stronger and faster man,

But sooner or later the man who wins

Is the man who thinks he can.
