Describe your business in a few words: CKI & Associates, Inc. is a Construction engineering and construction management firm and specializes in Transportation Infrastructure (highways and Bridges).

Name: Vincent K. Kumordzie, P.E.

Location: Annandale, Virginia USA

Company Name: CKI & Associates, Inc.

1. Tell us a little bit about your background?

Born in Ghana, now an American by naturalization, studied Civil engineering in Ghana, USSR and the USA. Have MSc degree in Engineering and Registered /licensed professional engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Maryland and Washington D.C. Began practising engineering since 1990.

2. Tell us how you started your business?

3 colleagues/friends, who worked for one of US’s top A&E firms and who share common ambitions and visions decided to come together and registered a company with $1000.00 from $333.00 per head contribution as start capital.

3. How long have you been in business?

Since August 1997

4. Did you know how you were going to make money with it? How did you do it?

Yes, we had a good idea, although there were no guarantees. Prior to forming CKI we managed and performed similar services under different programs for our last employer. All we had to do was to do the same things but this time for us.

5. What was your inspiration?

The partnership of friends itself was an inspiration. But more so was the thought of becoming our own bosses and taking control of decisions affecting our lives and destiny.

6. What was your highest moment?

When HNTB, our former employer agreed and accepted teaming up with us for future projects after being on opposing sides for the first 3 years of incorporation. We’re a small minority company and needed the help of the larger companies for jobs.

7. Were you ever scared? How did you overcome it?

Yes. We had planned to save for three years in advance of setting up the company but the window of opportunity we were looking forward to came at us sooner than anticipated. My wife had just given birth to my son, Kevin and we were not ready financially. With no other source of income the decision to go solo was hard.

8. What’s the best part of your job?

Getting to do the behind the scene stuff (soliciting for jobs) that in the past management did without our knowledge to ensure the company always had jobs. And that too happens to be the worst part of it.

9. What is the most important lesson you learned along the way?

See the best in people, Learn to focus on the best sides of things and be trust-worthy.

10. What piece of advice do you have for other business owners out there?

Trust in the Lord, give Him first place and do good. You will not know failure.

PS: For those wondering, Vincent is my counsin and a huge inspiration to me in his ability to start and succeed in such a highly competitive area as engineering in the USA.
